Junior Club Night – Thursday 25th August

Junior Club Night will kick off at 4.30pm with a special medal presentation to our J1/2 and J3/4 players. Food will be provided from 5.00pm onwards for all Junior players and parents, cost $5 per head.

Quiz Night – Saturday 20th August

The Quiz Night is only a week away so it’s time to get our thinking caps on!

Table bookings have been slow to start but hopefully you will do a Kyle Chalmers and make a late surge to the finish.  All you have to do is get together a group of trivial personalities and book your table. Remember it’s Olympics themed so there’s bound to be someone who wants to wear their budgie smugglers or lycra, and that’s always entertaining.

So don’t delay – contact Sue Tully on 0407 016 286 or sue.tully@grovecommunications.net and book a table. Tables of 8 @ $15 per head, doors open @7.00pm and first questions @ 7.30pm

Every team, from Juniors through to Masters also needs to provide some prizes to help make the night even more fun.  Ashe Egglestone has kindly offered to coordinate this so any questions direct them to her but each team needs to provide:

  • Prizes – worth either 1 x $120 or 2 x $60 .  If your team mates are going to make up a hamper please pick a theme, so “kids” or “gone fishing” or “mother’s rescue remedy”  – whatever.
  • A minimum of 4 x $15 bottles of wine from each team. If people would like to donate from their cellar and we get more than 4 per team then great!! This is for the Wine Wall. We will still sell tickets for $10, and then it’s lucky dip – you could get a bottle of Grange if there’s someone very generous in the club
  • Additionally we are looking for extra special donations, for the table prizes on the night and to cover the premium raffle, where we sell a limited number of tickets. So if you have connections in the hospitality field or own a timeshare in Busselton or Bali, or can offer a unique experience… Any are welcome and we can provide you with a letter if you need it to twist someone’s arm that this is for a genuinely good cause. CAN YOU SPONSOR OUR CLUB?

The Club is seeking major sponsors for its junior and senior teams for this coming season. As you know our Club is a not for profit organisation and all sponsorship monies received go directly to developing and supporting the Club and its members. In order for us to achieve our future goals, we need to secure additional levels of funding, over and above the strong level of support provided by our members in the past.

Over the past two years we have been extremely fortunate to have received significant contributions from both the Ariti and the Ryall families, which greatly assisted with our Lights Project, and has benefited many club members.

This season we have a unique opportunity for a potential sponsor to gain broad coverage via logos displayed on the club’s playing strip.  The entire club will be playing in new shirts, an updated design which was worn by the men’s turf sides last season.  We are expecting to field 19 sides in Hockey WA competitions this year, with teams in Men’s, Women’s, Juniors and Masters grades.  Overall there are more than 280 playing members at the Club, plus our reach extends beyond our players and includes our large supporter base.

Please think about helping out with this if possible. The various levels of sponsorship are outlined below, and each of the packages are flexible such that a combination of the benefits offered may be tailored to suit your particular business requirements. Every club member is also encouraged to utilise the services of our Sponsors. We give our sponsors additional exposure at every opportunity and our aim is to support those that support our Club.

JUNIOR SKILLS CLINIC – SUNDAY 21 FEBRUARY 4.00-6.00PM – HALE TURF

A Junior Skills Clinic is being run by our top coaches on Sunday 21 February from 4-6 pm for Years 5/6 upwards. Held at Hale Turf the cost is $25 and in addition to some coaching from our senior players and coaches it includes a sausage sizzle and drink at the end. CLUB REGISTRATION DAY – SATURDAY 13 FEBRUARY 10.00AM TO 1.00PM

Registration day will be held at the clubrooms on Saturday 13 February from 10am-1pm. It is important that anyone wanting to play for Newman this season come down so you can try on uniform sizes. If you weren’t aware, this year the entire club will be wearing in an updated playing shirt. The design was worn by the men’s turf sides last season and in 2016 every player will have the cost of a new shirt included in their fees. Uniforms must be ordered no later than 6 weeks out from the start of the season so we need to get your sizes during Registration Day. There will be a Women’s shirt with a more flattering cut, and all junior players will wear the new uniform too. For more info contact Dee on 0413 604 616

There will also be a range of new items for sale such as new jackets, shorts and singlets, so please come down and try your size.

Mouthguards are compulsory for all Junior Players for training and games, and we strongly advise all Senior players to wear them also. It is important as children grow and their  teeth and jaws change to have a new mouthguard yearly plus they can be fitted for children with braces. The cost may be as little as $15 -$40 and is claimable on your private health insurance plan. Pay on the day and then take straight to your health insurance provider to claim. Exclusive club only discounts on the day of up to 40% and we need a minimum booking of 50 …. so please call Dee to make a booking.

 

A message from The President

As most of you are now no doubt aware, Hilary has stepped down as President after 3 fruitful years at the helm and passed the baton to me.  I’d like to take this opportunity to thank Hilary for all her hard work and I know I have big shoes to fill.  I hope I’m at least half as effective in getting things done and keeping things rolling for the club as she has been.  I am honoured to have been given the trust and responsibility of this position and I’ll do my best to make sure we keep growing and improving over 2016.
Some of you may not know me, something I hope to remedy over the coming season, so if we’ve never met formally please come and say hi if you see me or contact me on murraybuzza@aapt.net.au if you have any questions or concerns regarding the club.
We have a new committee, albeit with some very familiar faces, so I’d like to thank all those who have contributed in the past and thank the new committee for 2016 for again taking on the very important jobs that enable our club to keep functioning.  We have some major work to do, particularly in the area of sponsorship and fundraising, so if you have any contacts or ideas then please feel free to let your committee know about them so we can act on them.  Fresh ideas and approaches are always welcome.
The big news so far is that we have been fortunate enough to secure a very well credentialled senior men’s coach for 2016.  Mark Sandhu has agreed to take on the top squad and he is already looking forward to getting to work with the boys.  We also finalised the women’s coaches before Christmas appointing Tahlya Sleep as Head Coach, and she is keen to see our Women hit the training track in January.
Thanks again to all those who made it to the AGM and all the hard work from the committee and others that has already gone into planning for the 2016 season.  I hope you all have a safe and happy Christmas and see you all in the New Year.

New Coaches Appointed for 2016

Newman Knights is very pleased to welcome on board Mark Sandhu as our new Men’s Head Coach. Mark is an accomplished field and indoor hockey coach having led the Australian Women’s Indoor Hockey Team to World Cups in 2007 and 2011. He has also been successful at club level having held the positions of Director of Coaching and Head Coach at various clubs in Western Australia.

Mark has already been putting together a pre-season program to kick start the new year after all the Christmas and New Year indulgence. Look out for more info in early January. We are also pleased to announce the appointment of Tahlya Sleep as the Head Coach for our Women in 2016. Known to most people as Sleepy, Tahlya has a very strong strategic approach to coaching and development, having coached both juniors and seniors for YMCC, and also having played and umpired at the top level (MTL) and Premier 2. Sleepy will be assisted by Fraser and Matt in consolidating on the development they have done over the past two seasons and together they will bring a new energy to our coaching ranks.
